Oak Ridge High School Online Independent Study Survey

(Parent Square Message sent out May 27, 2020)

Oak Ridge Families,

Superintendent Dr. Ron Carruth recently shared information with families regarding the opening of school for the 2020-2021 school year.

The purpose of this survey is to determine how many students need or would prefer an online Independent Study option.  Once we collect that information, we will examine our ability to fill this need. Our hope is to be able to offer students the environment they desire come August 2020.

In order to effectively plan, we need to know how many students wish to return to school under our soon-to-be-released Stage 2 or Stage 3 plans, and how many students would rather enroll in an Independent Study Program if the possibility were to exist.

Independent Study is a program where students are assigned, one Independent Study teacher.
  • Students work from home.
  • Students work online.
  • Students meet with a teacher one-on-one for one hour per week to facilitate all classes.
  • Students taking Independent Study may remain college-eligible by taking science lab, visual/performing art, and/or and World Language courses in a classroom-based setting, space permitting.
  • Advanced Placement courses offered on a limited basis and may be required to be taken as one of the two classroom-based courses.
  • A student may request a maximum of two classroom-based (on the ORHS campus) courses.

Enrollment in Independent Study will be on a semester-by-semester basis. When the state releases us back to the traditional classroom model, most Independent Study classes will be pulled back for the following semester.  If the announcement is made by the state mid-semester, students will finish the semester in Independent Study and then return to the classroom setting for the following semester.

Students not expressing interest in Independent Study will automatically be enrolled in a classroom-based setting under the Stage 2 or Stage 3 reopening guidelines.

Parents and Guardians should ONLY complete this survey if online Independent Study is an option your student may want to pursue for the fall term of 2020. Further information will be provided to interested families.

If your student is already in our Independent Study Program, please do not complete this survey.

Please complete this survey if your student would like to request to enroll in Independent Study on or before June 2, 2020.

The survey may be found on the main page of the ORHS website. Too, the link is provided here:
