Attendance Policy

Attendance Policy

Students are expected to attend all classes every day. Absence(s) from class are excused for illness, medical appointments, and funerals for members of the immediate family. Other absences that are valid, with prior approval, include college visits, court appearance and religious holidays. Absences that are not valid include ditching school, working, baby-sitting, personal business, and unverified illness. Should a parent/student fail to clear an absence within 48 hours, the student  will be assigned the appropriate number of detention(s) or Saturday school(s). Calling the school or providing a note will clear the truancy and the assigned consequences within the 48 hour period. Parents are expected to report any absences to the attendance office on the day of the absence. Attendance may not be adjusted three weeks after the absence date.
Late Arrival/Early Checkout

Late Arrival/Early Checkout

Students are required to go to the Attendance Office if they are late for the school day or leaving early to obtain a campus pass. Sending a note with your student expedites this process.  For early dismissals, if a campus pass is not obtained before class time, there could be SIGNIFICANT DELAYS  in releasing your student from class. Please indicate Name, Grade, Time of expected arrival/early check out, and a Reason.

OAK RIDGE IS A CLOSED CAMPUS. STUDENTS MAY NOT LEAVE CAMPUS DURING SCHOOL HOURS WITHOUT A PASS/PRIOR APPROVAL If your student does not check out before leaving they will receive one hour of detention – no exceptions.
Absence Verification

Absence Verification

Please verify student absences within 48 hours, utilizing one of the following options:
  • Submit an email to the attendance office
  • Call by phone (916) 933-6980, Select Option 2
  • Submit a message to Nicole Trevino via Parent Square

Parents, doctors, or school officials may verify absences. Students, who have attained the age of eighteen years, with parent signature, may verify their own absence(s). The school may request additional verification when deemed necessary. Absence verification should include the following information:
  • first and last name of the student
  • date(s) absent
  • reason for the absence
  • name and relationship of the person verifying the absence

extended abscences

extended abscences

Students who will be unable to attend school for an extended period of time, due to accident or injury for 2 consecutive weeks or more, should contact the Counseling Department to discuss possibilities for alternative learning options.  Independent Study Contracts are not available for students who are absent less than 3 weeks.

Attendance Errors

Attendance Errors

Occasionally students will be marked absent in error. The Attendance Office needs verification from the teacher before the error can be fixed. Please have your student obtain a note or email  from the teacher of the class period of error and return/forward to the Attendance Office. If this process is not followed the absence will be marked as a truancy and disciplinary consequences may be assigned.

Makeup Work

Makeup Work

If your student is absent from school, homework should be requested directly from their teacher.  You or your student can email your student's teachers using the teacher's first initial and last name @eduhsd.net or from the staff directory on the ORHS Webpage.

Two (2) school days will be allowed to make up each day's excused absence. If a student is absent on the day of a test, they may be required to take the test on the day of his/her return. If the absence falls on the day an assignment is due, and the student had prior knowledge of the assignment, the student may be required to submit that assignment upon the day of his/her return. If sufficient make-up time is not possible prior to the grading period, the teacher may issue an "I" (Incomplete) grade until such time as the work is completed. A maximum of four weeks after the grading period is allowed for such make up work. The student is responsible for arranging for makeup work.

Truancy

Truancy

When a student has repeated absences for unacceptable reasons (ditching classes, unverified illness related to excessive absences) the student will be considered a "habitual truant". Student(s) who fail to improve after the initial attendance review meeting with the Dean of Student Services, will be referred to Student Attendance Review Board Hearing (SARB).  Habitual truancy constitutes grounds for an involuntary transfer to an alternative school and a Student’s driving privilege may be revoked.
