    Computer Science
    Computer science is driving job growth and innovation throughout our economy and society. More than half of projected jobs in STEM fields are in computing occupations. Computer science develops students’ computational and critical thinking skills and shows them how to create, not simply use, new technologies. This fundamental knowledge is needed to prepare students for the 21st century, regardless of their ultimate field of study or occupation.
     
    Oak Ridge High School is committed to ensuring computer science is a central part of our student’s education, by offering an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Pathway to include the following courses:
    • Exploring Computer Science, designed to teach the fundamental concepts of and big ideas of computing. This course also satisfies the El Dorado Union High School District Computer Literacy graduation requirement.
    • AP® Computer Science Principles, intended to foster a wider appeal for the computer science discipline.
    • AP® Computer Science A, as an equivalent first-semester, college-level course in computer science.
    • Database Design/SQL Programming (an Oracle Academy course), for those students wanting to learn more about database implementation and makers projects (websites, arduinos, apps).
    Courses included in ICT pathway are sequenced to allow students to apply their learning to real world applications. The primary goal of this pathway is to provide students with transferable skills necessary for post-secondary education and career employment.

    Graduating seniors who have completed the following requirements will receive a certificate and colored cord, representing the achievement of completing the ICT pathway, to wear at graduation.
    • 30 total credits earned in the ICT pathway courses
    • Pathway course performance must be grade B or better
    • Ten (10) hours of volunteer work promoting Computer Science education
    • Professional Resume
    • Digital Portfolio
    • Capstone project to serve as culminating academic and intellectual experience consisting of technology artifact, portfolio entry and oral presentation.

    * All of the year-long courses in the Computer Science pathway have been approved as “a-g” college preparatory electives by the University of California Office of the President.
